What are the places that ferns are grown naturally? Actually all the plants have natural growth habitats, but for the indoor decorative purposes we have to acclimatize those plants to a new environment. Providing same conditions as natural, we can make a better growing healthy fern plant. So let’s see the factors that need to better growth.

For a successful growth need a warm temperature, shade and moisture in the growing media are essential. High humidity level is better for well growth. In dry season need to supply water and get wet whole the plant.

Temperature requirement

As I said ferns need a warm condition for better growth. There are tropical and temperate fern varieties. Sometimes temperate varieties need a lower temperature than tropical varieties. Normally 15-24 oC range is better for ferns growth.

Humidity level and water requirement

Ferns are like to grow in a wet environment. Wet substrate is always preferred to grow.  To keep that moisture, high humidity level is required. Normally it is better 60- 75 % of humidity for well growth. It is better to apply water as a spray. Keep good moisture content in the substrate and do not let the soil completely dry.

Soil and Soil pH

Most ferns can grow 4-7 of pH and better to maintain 7-8. It is better to use organic matter like compost as the media. Naturally ferns are growing on decaying substance like compost. Provide same soil condition for better growth.

Shade

Ferns are not growing along.  They need a shade. In a forest they always grow under a shade condition. They need to protect from direct sun light. 50- 60 % shade is optimum for well growth.

Propagation

Propagation of ferns in normally done by seeds. They are spores that can be collect under the leaves. Here is a guide to make a fern seed nursery.

Brown color fern spores should be obtained from one year old mature plants. Spores are seen underside of the mature leaves. Spores should be removed using a brush on to a white color paper. (It is easy to see them) The medium for the fern spores are consisted with 2.5mm sized leaf mold 1: sand: 1.

A shallow pot can be used and wet it well. Then drainage holes should be covered using concave tile pieces and a layer of dried leaves need to be applied over the tile pieces. This facilitates a good drainage.

The medium should be filled up to 3/4 of the pot and then a 4 mm sized tile layer need to be placed on top of the medium in the pot. Next got wet it well and spores should be spread on the tile layer. After that the pot should be kept in a water bath and cover with a glass. Then it must be kept under 50% shades to obtain plantlets.

Small plantlets with 4 leaves can be seen after 12 months. After those plantlets can be planted in 5 inch sized Polythene bags with the medium consist of Top soli: 4Leaf mould: 2 Cattle manure: 1 Sand 1: ½ inch Tile: ¼ Charcoal: ¼.

Fertilization

You can spray a N: P: K solution with two weeks interval. It is good to use a liquid fertilizer. It is also good to add organic fertilizer. Most ferns that grow in forest are growing on decaying plants logs or places with rich organic materials. Therefore it is better to research there natural growing substance and make in artificially for our purpose. So it is helps to make a well growing healthy plant.

Problems with the growth

Plants can be weak, if not supply nutrients. In heavy warm conditions leaves are turn into yellow. It is start from the base of the leave. Finally leaves are turned into brown color. It is a good solution to recover this problem by using a sprinkler irrigation system. Plants need a shade condition. If not sun burning patches can be occurred on the leaves.  There are very low pest attacks on ferns. But mealy bugs and scales damages may be occurred. Remove those damaged part to stop the disease. In sever conditions Dimethoate or Diazinon can be used.

What are the other requirements for a better ferns growth?
