Phalaenopsis orchid is an epiphytic plant and consisted with fleshy leaves and a single bud. Flowers seem like moths. Normally 10-12 flowers can be seen in one inflorescence. The long vas life and beauty have raised their value. Better to make cut flowers and pot plant. Let’s see the favorable conditions.

Light

Sun light is very important for any of the plant to grow well. It is good if can supply a uniform light condition throughout the day. Normally, phalaenopsis plant required a light between 30%-40%. The light condition can be controlled by using a net. Don’t exposure to the heavy sunlight, it will be damage to the leaves and flower. Low light conditions are reduced the plant growth and color development of the flowers.


Temperature

Temperature is another important factor in phalaenopsis care. Our main target is making flowers. If we cannot give optimum temperature conditions, it is impossible to have flowers. Therefore, day time temperature should be between 25 - 30 oC. High temperature and humidity increase the growing rate of the plant. The secret behind the blooming is low temperature at night time. It should be between 13 - 15 oC.


Humidity

60% - 80% humidity is preferred for phalaenopsis plant. When humidity is reduced, transpiration rate is increased. So plants become to dry. Therefore in dry seasons, humidity should be kept in proper level. Need to spray water on the plant and to the space.

Watering

should be used water without chlorine. It is better to spray water. Get wet all the plant and the air space well. It is better to add water in morning and evening. Don’t add water in night time. It may result rotten leaves.


Fertilization

Liquid fertilizer is better to add. Use an N: P: K: (20.20.20) 5 grams mixture for one litter of water. It is enough to add fertilizer one time for two days. Use a good sunny day to add fertilizer. Organic liquid fertilizer is also good for adding once a week.

You can use clay or plastic pots for this. It is depend on you use a decorative pot then plant get a nice look. Potting media should be consisted with charcoal, bricks or tile pieces and meevana bark pieces / Tree fern “Dicksonia Antarctica or coir. In additionally you can use cemented rigifoam or timber pieces to plant them.

Bacterial Blight


This is affected to different parts of the plant. First you can see soft, wet marks on the plant. Then they are turned to brown color and you can feel a bad smell. To control remove the infected parts and keep up the sanitation conditions and control the water. Can be used a “Cu” based fungicide to stop the spreading of the disease.

Mites Damage

very small organisms. Soft bodied insects which fed on the underside of the leaves. Spider mites are red, orange, and even whitish in color. The symptoms of injury can be identified as flecking, discoloration (bronzing) and scorching of leaves. Incidence can be controlled by spraying of 80% Sulpher, Abamectin, Hexythiazox.

They eat leaves completely. In additionally attract on flowers and buds. Use a pesticide to control them.

You just need to cut off the stalk before a selected internode in the stalk like in the picture. Then new inflorescence is growing like this. This is only for phalaenopsis.
